Digital First Media: Michigan Daily Newspapers

September 8, 2016 by Rose Thorn

In November 2015, I began working for Digital First Media (DFM) in the Oakland Press building in Pontiac, MI as a paginator. I was hired in as part of the New York team, which is dedicated to designing and creating DFM papers in New York. While I mainly assist with building New York newspapers, I also occasionally design Michigan daily papers as well. These include: The Oakland Press, The Macomb Daily, The Daily Tribune and The Morning Sun. In fact, […]

Digital First Media: The Record and The Saratogian

September 4, 2016 by Rose Thorn

In November 2015, I began working for Digital First Media in the Oakland Press building in Pontiac, MI as a paginator. I was hired in as part of the New York team, which is dedicated to designing and creating DFM papers in New York. While I started on The Morning Sun, I eventually graduated from that and started building New York papers, specifically The Record, based out of Troy, NY, and The Saratogian, based out of Saratoga, NY. Library hosts close-up look at Japanese culture

September 4, 2016 by Rose Thorn

In May, I was offered a unique opportunity to contribute to the Oakland Press. As a paginator/copy editor at Digital First Media, I frequently participate in Oakland Press meetings to decide the template for A1 of that day’s paper and to offer advice on the wire budget for that day. Consequentially, I have gotten to know Julie Jacobson-Hines, our local editor, on a first-name basis. She frequently asks how I’m doing and we have a great working relationship. One day in March, […]

Novi business helps Japanese adjust to life in America

September 3, 2016 by Rose Thorn

This was another piece that I freelanced for the Novi News in Fall 2015. The editor, Phil Allmen, and I, have a wonderful working relationship. I was honored to be able to freelance for him and I would do so again in a heartbeat. This was a piece did on a Japanese Family Services (JFS), a business dedicated to helping Japanese people relocate to life in America. Novi tends to be a hub of Japanese people who have moved to […]

Crash-test company opens new Novi office

September 3, 2016 by Rose Thorn

This article was yet another article I wrote for the Novi News in Fall 2015. The editor and I, Phil Allmen, have had a good working relationship and friendship for many years, and I was honored to be able to freelance for him. This was a basic event story, which featured the grand opening of Diversified Technical Systems (DTS), an automotive crash-test parts supplier, in Novi. It was great to be able to cover the reopening of a local business […]

Family tragedy inspires Novi woman’s artwork

July 25, 2016 by Rose Thorn

In Fall 2015, I began freelancing for the Novi News. The editor, Phil Allmen, and I have always had a great working relationship. I was very happy to take on a few stories while I was looking for full-time work, taking a class at Oakland University and lifeguarding part-time. This story is close to my heart because I put a lot of myself into it while I was writing it. The artist, Darcel Deneau, herself was an equally interesting, […]

Pumpkinfest 2015

September 24, 2015 by Rose Thorn

Every once and awhile you come along a story that doesn’t feel like work, even if it is. And, such was the case with this story: Pumpkinfest 2015. I really enjoyed writing about this festival for The Milford Times. It was my first paid opportunity, something I put my heart and soul into and a pleasure to write. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Note: The format is supposed to be a booklet, with several stories. […]
