Editing an edition of the Spinal Column

February 17, 2023 by Rose Thorn

In June of 2022, I worked with a team of freelancers to produce a Lakes edition of the Spinal Column, which came out July 6, 2022. It was definitely something I worked really hard to put my personal touch on by editing, writing and taking photos for and designing it, alongside my team. You can find the link for it here: https://www.spinalcolumnonline.com/pageview/viewer/2022-07-06. There’s also one article that didn’t quite make the edition on Stephen Mac visiting the Commerce Township library […]

Police Reporter at the Traverse City Record-Eagle

February 17, 2023 by Rose Thorn

As a police reporter for the Traverse City Record-Eagle, I learned how to report full-time on a daily basis, churning out about one to three stories per day in a newsroom. To do this, I worked with Traverse City Police Department and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office. I developed relationships with them, learned what was going on in the department and attended daily news briefings where police logs were read and interviews were conducted. Many people said that these […]

Village acquires 37 properties due to unpaid taxes

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

I originally wrote this story as an assignment for class. I had to write a story involving my local city council, and got extra credit for publication. In an attempt to get the extra credit, I contacted The Milford Times and worked closely with senior reporter Aileen Wingblad to write the story. This story was featured in the Milford Times on November 22, 2012.

Becoming Business Person of the Year

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

In 2014, I interned at Orion Area Chamber of Commerce (OACC). I was assigned to write advertorials for the “What’s the BIZ?” section of The Lake Orion Review. Most of my articles were achieved, but this one was published. It was probably the crowning achievement of my internship: a two page spread with a photo, only lightly edited. This story was featured in The Lake Orion Review on December 3, 2014.

Vision Restored

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

The box was stuffed in a corner and covered in plastic, with her lunch box thrown on top of it. It just sat there by her feet, waiting to be recognized. Then, Paige Biggs-Vanzo, the marketing communications director for Meadow Brook Theatre, took the small, cardboard box out and uncovered it. Inside, there were a bunch of glasses and eyeglass cases, two things which Meadow Brook Theatre is currently collecting for their collection drive for New Eyes for the […]

The year of the dragon

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

If there’s one event I love at Oakland University, it’s Chinese New Year. And, while I was a staff intern at The Oakland Post, I got a chance to write about it. The result was a photo story featuring the event. I myself did not take the photos, but I did write the story. This story was featured in The Oakland Post on January 25, 2012. A version of this story appeared on the Post’s website on January 24, […]

The adventure continues

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

I think this was the story that taught me how to report. It was writing this story that got me thinking about my reporting style and my role as a journalist. This story was published in The Oakland Post on January 18, 2012. A version of this story appeared online on the Post’s website on January 17, 2012 at: http://www.oaklandpostonline.com/life/article_6c13b1dc-8042-5061-9c37-67add5f0d2f0.html.

Work, play keep students at OU on break

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

My work impressed the editors at The Oakland Post, and they encouraged me to apply. Thus, to my great pleasure and excitement, I got my first position in journalism as a staff intern reporter for The Oakland Post. I basically did all the work of a paid reporter, unpaid. I wrote about 3 stories per week, mostly for the Life section, but not all were always published. This story is the first one I ever wrote for the Post […]

A case for class cancellation

April 20, 2015 by Rose Thorn

On November 9, 2011, a presidential debate was held at Oakland University. Once again, I wrote The Oakland Post and told them what I thought. Many classes were not cancelled for the debate, and I thought they should be. My train of thought turned into a Mouthing Off article, which, I’m proud to say, was featured in the edition of The Oakland Post that ran on debate day.
